Life, Death and the Perpetual Wound

amoda666 Listening to this album while driving at night is a cinematic experience. I was reminded oddly of "Paris, Texas", a film which combines the mythic open roads of the West, with various states of in-betweeness (of adult and child, of woman and man). James often describes his work as liminal. Liminality speaks at the edge of something, being in the ambiguous place and paving a way for new identities, new places. A rite of passage ready to occur. A wonderful album, although I wish it were longer! Favorite track: Katie's Apartment WA.

trapdoorsman you are by yourself in a big museum nobody's ever heard of. lots of windows overlooking a tranquil marsh. you sit down in a tiny theatre room; the lights dim, and a film about oceanic currents begins to play. the soundtrack is muted, wistful, serene, artificial but organic, made on crumbling synthesizers. it makes you feel both more and less alone. the moment lasts forever, and then it is over. you cannot stay in this room. you can visit as often as you like, but you will still be visiting. Favorite track: Cassettelands ID.

balloonxm A powerful work in neo/noir-ambience that conveys true, genuine emotions with (almost) no lyrics whatsoever. Dude's just getting started too. Cheers to the Ministry.

Moon is up, four-o-clock Perpetual wound's in my heart Power’s out in the town all the rooms here have gone dark I’ve been all around this world: Cross the street to the lake pass the yard to the store turn around and head back again The mountain’s still inside of me Bedrock of my life The desert’s still inside of me Paradox of my life Throw my phone to the sage on the mountain I’ll my stand Stagger up alluvial plains dagger in my hand The fireworks in the distance snare drum my every step The animals of the valley will hunt my flesh The mountain’s still inside of me Bedrock of my life The desert’s still inside of me Paradox of my life

about

Life, Death and the Perpetual Wound follows a mystical road trip through a magic-realist American West, from the Seattle waterfront to the vast Chihuahuan Desert. These are all real locations that have marked the author in some way and rich stories lay behind every track. It’s both a document of what it means to be depressed in the face of undeniable natural beauty, and also a survey of liminal spaces.
